Wasteland Press Reviewed in The Fine Print of Self-Publishing
FORMAT OF BOOKS: Hardcover and paperback
GENRES ACCEPTED: Wasteland Press's submission guidelines do not address content, so one can assume they will accept any genre.
PUBLISHING FEES: This publisher offers six black-and-white packages and three color packages. Only black-and-white packages are covered in this review. A comparison chart of the black-and-white packages is available at http://www.wastelandpress.net/Compare.html.
Wasteland's base prices refer to books that range from 40 to125 pages after production. If your book is longer than that, there is an additional charge of $30 to $400 per fifty-page increase. (It's unclear from the website how the price jump is determined, because there is so much variance.) Note that I have included the price for a 200-page book in parentheses next to the base price.
Basic Plan: At $195 ($195 for a 200-page book), this package is for authors who simply want to get their book in print for personal use. It includes:
• Five paperback books, shipping included
• Custom cover, designed in-house with input from the author: The designer creates one cover and then works with the author on any changes for an undefined amount of time.
• Option to print a hardcover version of the book for an additional $250
• Limited distribution: This means the book will be available through Wasteland's online bookstore only. For $50, authors have the option to purchase an ISBN and bar code.
• Choice of trim size: 5" x 8", 5.5" x 8.5", or 6" x 9"
• Unlimited black-and-white photos throughout the book
Silver Plan: This package is priced at $350 ($440 for a 200-page book). In terms of services, the Silver Plan is identical to the Basic Plan with the exception that it includes a total of twenty-five paperback books, shipping included. It also offers a higher royalty (see royalty section for details).
Gold Plan: At $650 ($925 for a 200-page book), this package includes everything in the Basic and Silver Plans, plus:
• A total of seventy-five paperback books, shipping included
• ISBN
• Bar code
• Full-service marketing: Includes a press release written and distributed by Wasteland to more than one thousand media outlets, alerting them to the release of your book and providing follow-up information. It only includes two review copies of your book, but since this is basically an untargeted blast, that may not be an issue.
• Full distribution: Makes your book available on major online retailers, as well as available to order via brick-and-mortar stores. It does not provide online tracking of your book sales, but that information is available via an email query to the publisher.
• Five hours of copyediting: Can include formatting, structuring, and spelling and grammar check, but does not include rewriting or restructuring the author's work.
• Option of a three- or six-month payment plan
• Bookseller Returns Program
Platinum Plan: This package is priced at $995 ($1,400 for a 200-page book). Wasteland promotes this package to "career-minded writers." It includes everything in the Basic, Silver, and Gold Plans, plus:
• A total of 150 books, shipping included
• Ten total hours of copyediting
• Five total review copies as part of the marketing plan described in the Silver Plan
Titanium Plan: This package is priced at $1,250 ($1,700 for a 200-page book) and is for authors who want their book published in hardcover and paperback versions. It includes everything in the Platinum Plan, plus:
• A total of five hardcover copies of your book, shipping included
• Fifteen total hours of copyediting
Ultimate Plan: This package is priced at $1,995 ($2,750 for a 200-page book). Wasteland bills this package as its "most cost efficient." It includes everything in the Titanium Plan, plus:
• A total of five hundred paperback copies of your book, shipping included
• Twenty-five total review copies as part of the marketing plan (details under Gold Plan)
• Twenty total hours of copyediting
